You’ve just got engaged! Congratulations! It’s a magical time for sure. However, once the excitement cools down, the reality of the task ahead can sometimes seem overwhelming. It’s a pretty safe bet that as you start to gather information on a myriad of entertainers and options, you will come across the statement “The DJ can make or break an event.”

So as you begin to navigate through your entertainers and options here a short list of what to look for in a Wedding DJ

  1. Experience:  There is no substitute for experience. Not all DJ are great from the start and in many occasions their price point reflects that. The old adage “you get what you pay for” holds true here. It’s also important to note that, the most expensive DJ doesn’t always equate to the best either. Choosing someone with experience is of paramount importance. Planning and hosting a wedding is an expensive affair, with many moving parts and timelines that need to be meet. Trusting that hefty responsibility to an inexperienced person, can place your major investment and plans in jeopardy. An experienced DJ/MC knows how to adhere to your pre-planned timeline and directions, problem solve and quickly adapt to unforeseen circumstances in a timely and professional manner. It also important that you interview your entertainer, put them on the spot by asking them to audition “live” in front of you. Ask them how they would announce certain things or what they would do if there was a delay. Reviews are also great yardstick by which to measure them. Choose quality of the reviews over quantity. Did they show adaptability and creativity?
  2. Confidence: There is a huge difference between confidence and cockiness. A experienced DJ will want to learn about you and your plans, while an inexperienced DJ will tell you what they do without your input. Your wedding day isn’t about them, it’s about you. If your DJ doesn’t show that interest from the beginning, by all means keep looking! You’ll want a DJ who is sure they can bring the right sound or mood to the reception on your wedding day based on the criteria you’ve shared.
  3. Professionalism:  You can’t fake professionalism, you either have it or you don’t. You’ll want an entertainer who values your time and provides you answers in a timely and professional manner. Communication is the cornerstone of professionalism, saying what’ll you do and doing what you say. Sometimes the smallest details can change the trajectory of an event. When we book an event, we go into great detail to make sure that we know all the important details of your day. From the content, to the timing, the participants, the venue, as well as any other special requests that may be needed.   1. Masters of music: A great wedding DJs are masters at using music to set the mood and lead your guests on a musical journey through your celebration. As they transition from the traditional pomp and circumstance, to the more upbeat cocktail hour, and then into a relaxing and conversational dinner time, it should be seamless. Then setting up the beginning of your scheduled dances, with clear and concise announcements that blend right into those special songs. Once the spotlight songs are completed, your DJ should be able to bring the party to your event, mixing in and out of genres and tempos of the music you’ve selected, to match the energy and participation of your guests, A great DJ does so much more than just pick the next song, They have to cut, blend and mix songs to keep the party moving along.   2. Reading a crowd: Every crowd is different. A good DJ understands that the mood can quickly change throughout an event. You may need a calmer ambiance during a meal to stimulate conversation, a or playful mood during the cake cutting, or a quicker transition to a higher energy dance music.
